1/06/2010 - NEW State of the Art System for Diagnosing Heart & Lung Disease

HOSPITAL PURCAHSES NEW EQUIPMENT

FOR DIAGNOSING HEART AND LUNG DISEASES

Pulmonary patients who are referred to Oneida Healthcare Center now have access to advanced technology that will help their doctors with diagnosis and treatment.  The pulmonary function lab is now located in room 443 on the fourth floor of the hospital.

The new Pulmonary Function Testing (PFT) equipment was recently installed at OHC, said Mary Parry, Director of Cardiopulmonary Services. "This advanced equipment gives us more refined, more accurate readings to diagnose any kind of pulmonary disease or condition."

Pulmonary ailments include chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, emphysema and asbestosis. COPD is one of the leading causes of death in the United States.

"Our Pulmonary Function Lab will monitor the effectiveness of lung-disease treatment; monitor exposure to substances such as asbestos; and evaluate lung functions," Parry commented.

PFT patients are asked to sit in a booth that is transparent on all sides; they then breathe into a tube. "This checks flows and volumes, and how well oxygen is getting into the bloodstream," Parry explained.

Parry
also noted that the new PFT equipment meets American Thoracic Society standards. Tests available at the OHC Pulmonary Function Lab include spirometry, diffusion capacity and plethymography - lung volumes and diffusion capacity.

Testing can be scheduled by calling Cardiac Testing @ 361-2275.
Available tests include:

  • Simple Spirometry
  • Simple Spirometry pre and post bronchodilator
  • Complete Pulmonary Function testing- which includes simple spirometry pre and post, lung volumes and diffusion

Any questions can be directed to Mary Parry at 361-2075.
