Imaging Services
OHC provides a complete range of digital Radiology services on the second floor of the hospital and at the Alice M. Gorman Imaging Center, located in the lower level of 139 Fields Drive, off Seneca Street. The Gorman Center features state of the art MRI, R2 mammography, 3-D ultrasound and DEXA bone density scanning services in a comfortable and relaxing, patient-friendly setting. This location affords patients of Women's Health Associates and Oneida OB/GYN Group with particularly convenient access to the Gorman center's Mammography and Bone Density services.
Oneida Healthcare Center offers patients access to the world's most advanced computed tomography (CT) system. Featuring sophisticated multi-slice technology, the hospital's "Toshiba Aquilion 64" can capture precise images of any area of the body in as little as a ten second breath-hold. The fast scanning capabilities and unmatched image quality offer significant benefits for a quick and accurate diagnosis of trauma patients experiencing chest pain or stroke. Additionally, chest exams, which take 20- 30 minutes with a standard CT scanner, can now be performed in just 19 seconds with images that allow physicians to see internal injuries and disease in greater detail than ever before.
With this 64 slice technology, we can see more anatomical information than previously thought possible, which means we are able to diagnose problems like blood clots, infections and cancer in greater detail and with more clarity. As a result, we will have the ability to make an accurate diagnosis at earlier stages, which means that patients can begin receiving treatment sooner for potentially better outcomes.
With the coverage and speed capabilities of the Toshiba system, a wider range of patients also may have more options to undergo noninvasive procedures. For example, the system can be used to more accurately visualize soft plaque and measure coronary stenosis for the detection of heart disease, which has historically required more invasive or surgical procedures to confirm a diagnosis. Other benefits are reduced radiation exposure to patients, as well as to hospital staff , and the system accommodates the scanning of both larger and taller patients with the ability to expand its field-of-view to accommodate specific patient sizes and clinical needs.
Oneida Healthcare Center is the only imaging center in the area to offer the very latest technology in cancer diagnosis and care. The new technology, known as PET / CT combines the benefits of both Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and Computed Tomography (CT), allowing physicians to diagnose cancer more quickly and accurately. PET / CT provides oncologists and other specialists the most comprehensive clinical information available for managing cancer. Doctors can collect both anatomical and biological information during a single examination. The information obtained by PET / CT allows for accurate tumor detection and localization for a variety of cancers, including melanoma, lymphoma, lung, colorectal, head and neck, and ovarian cancers. Before having a scan, patients receive a dose of a "tracer", which mimics substances found naturally in the body including water, sugars and proteins. These tracers accumulate in diseased cells. During the scan the tracers are detected by the PET / CT system, creating an image of the patient and highlighting any abnormal physiology. This image helps physicians determine if any disease is present, the location and extent of the disease and track how rapidly the disease is spreading. The benefits of this technology include earlier cancer diagnosis, greater accuracy in determining the stage thatthe cancer is in, and more precise treatment planning. A PET / CT exam is painless and safe, and is generally conducted in less than thirty minutes.
